JCDecaux owns a company in Norway called ClearChannel, which is going to buy all bus stops in Bergen, tear them down, rebuild them and sell advertisment placements. The local culture scene riots, because it fears to lose the most important channel to promote their activities. Today Kamelon hosted a protest concert - for free - with Kings of Convenience, The Owens and some other bands. Afterwards at around 1am started an event called jamming with Edward. The evening was really great…

After my parents left, I went downtown to a club called Kamelon to a lovely jazz evening. Chatted with the bar keeper - a chinese-spanish-norwegian girl studying marine engineering.

I discovered two cool things this night in Bergen: the bar “Landmark” and the one man show “Casa Electro Novo“. Diane and I wanted to go to a new location and went to Landmark without knowing what the program was. It turned out that a artist was playing that Diane already saw and liked a lot. Landmark is located between the two buildings of the Art Museum of Bergen and is more a lounge/bar than a Club - but a very very nice bar/lounge - will have to check again if it is may be more party on other nights.

We walked up to Langevatnet behind Hatleberg again and had some nice small hikes. Around these lakes you will find many single paths or can choose to walk on pedestrian roads - it is great to have this area at the doorsteps of the studenthjem to regenerate from school work.

For those of you, who could not believe that Bergen can get any nicer: you are proven wrong. My lovely girlfriend arrived yesterday and brough the sunshine. First stop was of course Fløyen before heading down in the small streets of Bergen - many of which I had not seen before.
In the evening I invited Diane to DNS - den national scene - to see Peer Gynt. What I believed to be an opera turned out to be a drama and the music of grieg - the reason for us to see it - had been replaced with some modern music. Drama is hard to follow if you don’t get a word.

Living in Norway is expensive and is said to be the most expensive place to drink beer.
Let’s have a close look at these prices.
Bergens Tidene publishes every week in its “ekstra” an overview of different prices in different bars in Bergen. The prices for 0.5l of beer range from 25 NOK (in fact even below that) in Klubben pÃ¥ NHH up to 75 NOK in the Harbour Café. Let’s convert these to 0.2l-Kölsch prices (Cologne’s beer):
in Klubben 10 NOK = 1.25 EUR for 0.2l
(good deal, even in Cologne you will pay around 1-1.5 EUR)
in Harbour Café 30 NOK = 3,75 EUR for 0.2l (knocks your socks off).
We learned that beer can be expensive, but does not have to be - if you are a smart shopper! Click on “continue reading” to get the price overview actual as of October 17th 2005. Or click here to access the most recent bt.no/ekstra in PDF.
